Murali pulls up stumps with Renegades

Sri Lanka legend and Melbourne Renegades favourite Muttiah Muralitharan has opted out of playing another season of the KFC T20 Big Bash League, with the off-spinner instead deciding to focus on his coaching commitments.

In the past two seasons with the Renegades, Muralitharan claimed 19 wickets in 16 matches and continued to prove himself a menace to opposition batsmen.

The 42-year-old played five matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore in this year’s IPL, and for a long time it appeared likely the world record holder for Test wickets (800) would again turn out in Renegade red this BBL season, however increasing demand for his coaching expertise has curtailed his playing commitments.

“I signed for three years with the Kolkata state team and I’m doing about 30 days of work in a year,” Muralidaran told a press conference overnight.

“I was supposed to play in the Caribbean league. I gave it up.

“I told the Big Bash League I’m not coming and also the IPL – I’ve advised them I’m not going to be available.

“My future plans are just to help spinners all around the world. That’s the role I’m going to play.”

Melbourne Renegades boss Stuart Coventry said Muralidaran’s absence would be felt by fans in BBL|04, and wished the cult figure all the best for his future endeavours.

“Murali has advised us that he won’t be competing in BBL|04 as he looks to scale back his playing commitments around the world,” Coventry said.

“Murali was a popular member of the Renegades squad who brought world-class expertise in spin bowling to us in BBL|02 and 03.

“He has made many friends in Melbourne during his time in red and we wish him all the best with his future coaching roles.”

The Renegades have boosted their playing stocks impressively ahead of BBL|04, signing Australia players Matthew Wade and Callum Ferguson, as well as New Zealand international Jesse Ryder.

The club is also in negotiations with West Indian superstar Dwayne Bravo about returning for another stint as the Renegades look to turn around a disappointing BBL|03 campaign.
