Mumbai Indians have brought in Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain, Charith Asalanka, as a replacement player ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs.

The left-handed batting all-rounder replaces South African pacer Corbin Bosch, who has been named in South Africa’s Test squad for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, scheduled from June 11 to 15 at Lord’s.

In addition to Asalanka, the five-time IPL champions have also signed two English players—Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson. These signings come as Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton exit the squad due to national commitments. Jacks is part of England’s squad for a six-match white-ball series against the West Indies, while Rickelton has been called up for South Africa’s WTC final squad.

With Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings having already secured their playoff spots, Mumbai Indians, currently fourth on the points table, and Delhi Capitals are vying for the final place. Therefore, Asalanka, Bairstow, and Gleeson will feature only if Mumbai Indians qualify for the playoffs.

Asalanka was signed for INR 75 lakhs, while Bairstow, a seasoned wicketkeeper-batter, joins at a price of INR 5.25 crore, and fast bowler Gleeson was acquired at his base price of INR 1 crore.

Mumbai Indians are scheduled to face Delhi Capitals on May 21 and Punjab Kings on May 26, with both matches set to be played in Jaipur.
