Muay Thai Women’s Championship Sri Lanka 2023 – Media Conference

WBC (World Boxing Council) Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Muay Thai Federation of Sri Lanka set to launch the ‘Pink is stronger than you think’, Muay Thai Women’s Championship Sri Lanka 2023.

The championship will also act as a charity event where all proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Unit of the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama. This was mentioned by Roshan Duminda, WBC Country Head, in a media conference publicizing the event held at the Mercantile Cricket Association.

Through this championship, the WBC Sri Lanka will look to open its doors to professional international competitions for Sri Lankan fighters. The fight night, which consists of 8 bouts, will be held on 29th April from 4.30pm to 8.30pm at the Royal MAS Arena.

“WBC Sri Lanka was officially recognized by the parent body in 2020. In this short but difficult period because of the covid-19 outbreak we have done a considerable amount to promote the sport,” added Vimukthi Abeynayake, Business Development Manager of WBC Sri Lanka added.

“The current generation is into UFC and One Championship and there is a lot of interest in mixed martial arts. In terms of functional fitness this is great and not like just going to gym. This is a great opportunity to introduce and promote the sport amongst the women in Sri Lanka.

We have top tier fighters who have been World Champions in different men’s categories. However, we have done that with bare-minimum facilities. We don’t have proper training facilities, equipment and even a proper ring. We need sponsors. What’s best for the would-be sponsors is that they will get the exposure or the brand-milage in international tournaments too,” He further added.

WBC Sri Lanka is a sanctioned organization which operates directly under its international counterpart. The aim of the organization is to build the infrastructure to enable professional combative sports to be a viable revenue stream for long term sustainability of both the organization and its stakeholders.

Their future goals include, to build the platform for international fighting competitions and join the tourism industry and contribute to the promotion of tourism and the promotion of the sport. Muay Thai Federation of Sri Lanka is the National Body under the Ministry of Youth & Sports.
