A tweet by former England captain Michael Vaughan has angered Sri Lankan cricket fans, who took to social media disapproving the comment.

The matches of the ongoing World T-20 tournament in Bangladesh are preceded by the national anthems of the participating nations and during one of Sri Lanka’s games Vaughan made fun at the Sri Lankan national anthem.

‘Just rung home, made a brew, been to the toilet and made a cake during the Sri Lankan national anthem…’

The tweet was retweeted by over hundred followers of Vaughan. Angry responses followed in social media following the tweet.

‘And God save Elizabeth from what?’ a Sri Lankan fan responded making reference to the British national anthem and the British Monarch – Queen Elizabeth II. The first few words of British national anthem are, ‘God save our gracious Queen.’

There was support for the ‘And God save Elizabeth from what’ comment as one fan commented, ‘From Shame’.

‘I do not recollect any queen around who is gracious,’ responded Gale De Kauwe, a Sri Lankan domiciled in Australia.

Another fan responded sarcastically to Vaughan comment stating. ‘Sorry that amazing anthem put the fear of god in you and made you wet your pants. Did you change those too?

Yorkshire’s Vaughan succeeded Nasser Hussein in 2003 as England’s captain.

Two years later he helped England regain the Ashes after 16 years.
