The 30th edition of the Novices Championship organized by the Mercantile Badminton Association (MBA) will be kicked off on April 4, 2013 at St. Thomas’ College Sports Complex, Mount Lavinia.
This year’s tournament has sealed a record of attracting the highest number of shuttlers to have participated at a MBA Novices Championship.
Speaking at a press briefing held recently, the President of the MBA Mr. Nirodha De Costa stated that a total of around 372 players will be taking part in the tournament, with the breakdown of 88 female participants and 284 males.
The tournament will be structured and operated across 10 categories namely: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, Men’s Veterans Singles, Men’s Veterans Doubles, Women’s Veterans Singles, Women’s Veterans Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Masters Singles.
The tournament will conclude on April 7, 2013 following the Award Ceremony scheduled at 4.30pm.
According to the organizers, the winners of each category would be awarded with sponsorships to participate in international tournaments. The 2012 novices winners had participated in a tour to Malaysia.
The Principal Sponsor of the tournament is AVI – Mission Critical Sportswear. The official Drinking water supplier is American Water.
