The cancellation of Test matches to accommodate the now defunct Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) could be a worry for the Sri Lankan cricketers as they play just five Tests during the current year and skipper Angelo Mathews is certainly disappointed.

“We are definitely disappointed that we don’t have a Test series against a top quality team,” said Mathews.

Sri Lanka cancelled a two-match away series with West Indies in favour of a limited over triangular series and also abandoned their Test series against South Africa that was lined up on the current tour.

South Africa, the world’s number one Test team last played a series in Sri Lanka in 2006.

“We like to play more Test cricket. There are only five Test matches for us this year, I think. We would like to play more Tests and we would like to improve on our rankings as well. That’s the way it is for us,” said Mathews.

Sri Lanka is ranked seventh in Test ranking, the lowest it has slumped in as many years depleting its chances of qualifying for the inaugural World Test Championships in 2017.

Only the top four ranked teams will play in the Test Championships.
