The Mercantile tennis tournament for the year 2015 concluded yesterday, 14th December, with the awards ceremony which was held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association at 5.00 p.m.
The tennis players from MAS holdings whose combined efforts registered points for their team from the very start of the tournament which commenced on the 27th of November, carried away the trophy for the second year by surpassing their opponents by a margin of 88 points with their total score of 129.5. Standard Chartered Bank obtained 42 points to be placed 1st runners up and Amana Bank was awarded 2nd runners up with their haul of 34 points.
The main stakeholders for the victory of the winning team were the winners of the Women’s Singles, Men’s Division 3, Men’s Division 2 and Men’s Doubles events. In the Women’s Singles final match between the captain of the MAS team, Sherene Wijesinghe and Renuka Kurukulasuriya of Pan Asia Bank, Sherene Wijesinghe won with the match score being 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Priyantha Fernando of MAS defeated his fellow team mate Shehan Ferdinands to win the Men’s Singles Divison 3 event with the score 6-4,3-6,10-6.Mewan Gajadeera of MAS holdings claimed victory over Sanjay Wijemanne of Standard Chartered Bank in the Men’s Singles Divison 2 event as he was given a walkover. The Men’s Doubles match witnessed interesting competition between two duos from MAS – Shehan Gomez with Sohan Patrick who beat Mewan Gajadeera and Mafaz Mohideen, 6-1, 6-1.
