Manchester United through to the UCL knockout stage

Manchester United booked their place in the last 16 with a resounding 5-0 win away at Bayer Leverkusen.

 

Group A

Antonio Valencia started the scoring with Emir Spahic (own goal), Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Nani also scoring. Douglas Costa scored a brace as Shakhtar Donetsk beat Real Sociedad 4-0 at the Donbass Arena. United will look to hold on to top spot in their group with a draw against Shakhtar at Old Trafford while the Ukrainian side needs a win to progress. Leverkusen will look to beat Real Sociedad in Spain and will hope for Shakhtar to not get more than a point against United.

Group B

Arturo Vidal scored a hat trick as Juventus beat FC Copenhagen 3-1 at home with Olof Mellberg scoring one for the visitors. Ten man Real Madrid beat Galatasaray 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu with Gareth Bale, Alvaro Arbeloa, Angel Di Maria and Isco getting on the score sheet after Umut Bulut had cancelled out Bale’s opener. Sergio Ramos was sent off on 26 minutes. Real will progress with top spot in hand while Juventus and Galatasaray will battle it out when they meet in Turkey with the former needing a point and the latter needing a win to qualify.

Group C

Edinson Cavani scored the winner for Paris Saint-Germain against Olympiakos after Kostas Manolas had cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener. Marco Verratti was sent off for the Parisians on 46 minutes. Anderlecht were beaten 3-2 at home by Benfica. PSG will qualify as group leaders while Olympiakos and Benfica will look to qualify at the expense of the other. 

Group D

Bayern Munich beat CSKA Moscow 3-1 in Russia with Arjen Robben, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller scoring for the European champions while Keisuke Honda pulled one back for the Russian outfit. Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored for Manchester City as they beat Viktoria Plzen 4-2 at the Etihad. Bayern Munich and City are through to the last 16 with the former most likely to progress as group toppers.     

Group E

Mohamed Salah scored a late goal as FC Basel beat Chelsea 1-0 in Switzerland while Steaua Bucuresti drew 0-0 at home against Schalke. Chelsea have already qualified for the last 16 and will look to progress on top of their group when they host Steaua Bucuresti in the final round of the group stage. FC Basel need just a draw against Schalke to qualify while the Germans need a win to go through. 

Group F

Jack Wilshere scored brace in either half to help Arsenal beat Marseille 2-0 at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil missed a penalty in the first half. Borussia Dortmund beat Napoli 3-1 at the Signal Iduna Park with Marco Reus, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang getting on the score sheet. Lorenzo Insigne scored for the Italian side. The Gunners need just a draw to qualify when they travel to Naples while Dortmund will be hoping for a win away at Marseille to secure progress.

Group G

Adrian’s goal for Atletico Madrid was cancelled out by teammate Toby Alderweireld’s own goal as they drew 1-1 away at Zenit St Petersburg. Jackson Martinez scored for Porto after Roman Kienast had put Austria Vienna in front as the game ended 1-1 in Portugal. Atletico Madrid have already qualified with top spot while Zenit and Porto will be hoping to qualify at the other’s expense.

Group H

Ajax Amsterdam held on to beat Barcelona 2-1 at home despite being reduced to 10 men after Joel Veltman was sent off on 48 minutes. Thulani Serero and Danny Hoesen scored for the hosts while Xavi scored from the spot for Barca. Kaka, Christian Zapata and Mario Balotelli scored for AC Milan as they beat Celtic 3-0 in Glasgow. Barca need just a draw to qualify for certain even though they already have mathematically. AC Milan and Ajax will battle it out for second place with the latter needing a win away at the San Siro.
