The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the premier Rugby playing club of the island, Kandy SC, took place on 12th July (Saturday) at their clubhouse in Nittawela, Kandy. The former Dharmaraja College and Kandy Sports Club Ruggerite Mahesh Weerasinghe was re-elected as the President of the Kandy Sports Club for yet another year.
Meanwhile former St. Anthony’s and Kandy SC Captain (1997) Lasantha Wijesuriya will render his services as a Vice President for another year. Apart from him, the Sylvestarian, the Secretary of Central Province Cricket Association (CPKA) and Secretary of Kandy District Cricket Association (KDCA) and Exco member of Sri Lanka Cricket, Janaka Pathirana, will continue his services as another Vice President. Further, Trinity College’s 1983 Bradby Shield-winning Captain, Kandy SC Captain (1986 & 1987) and national Tusker (1986 – 1988) Ashan Ratwatte will be the other Vice President of the club.
Further, the Trinitian Sujeewa Liyanage was re-elected as the secretary, while Upul Silva will continue his service in the capacity of the treasurer.
The Kandy Sports Club was founded in 1874 by the upcountry plantation community as the Kandy Athletic, Boating, Cricket, Football and Dancing Club, and later they started playing Rugby, Hockey and Polo by renaming the club as the Kandy Sports Club. Though Kandy SC is considered the most successful Rugby Club on the island, they have to wait until 1994 to clinch a league title under the leadership of Indrajith Bandranayake. It is no secret that veteran figure Hon. Malik Samarawickrama played a major role behind the success of the hill country club over the last three decades.
During last season, Kandy managed to regain their lost glory by outclassing the defending champions CR & FC in the League Tournament and went on to clinch the Clifford Knock-out Cup on their home soil. Under the new leadership of Tharindu Chathuranga, Kandy SC firmly believes that they can replicate their usual brilliant performance to clinch another triple crown.
