With the motive of stabilising their status as the “Kings of Sri Lankan School Rugby”, Isipathana College has officially announced the appointment of rugby maestro Saimoni Rokini as their new rugby consultant. The assignment came at a crucial juncture as the school prepares for the upcoming school’s rugby season by announcing the tactical edge of the “Green Army”. The Fijian speedster is no stranger to Sri Lankan rugby, having a wealth of experience under his belt with a clear insight into the game.
The dynamic three-quarter, Rokini, had a blazing rugby career driven by his pure pace and unmatched power across multiple levels. As a versatile player, Romani specialised as a centre three-quarter who can quickly adapt into fullback and wing positions at any time. After being born and raised in the Pacific island nation Fiji, he represented the proud nation in both XV’s and 7’s formats. While starring in the Fiji national sevens outfit, he immensely contributed to Fiji’s cup championships during Hong Kong 7’s in 1998 and 1999. He reached the pinnacle of his playing career after assuming the duties as the Fijian rugby 7’s skipper, at the Hong Kong Sevens 2004. There he made a bold impression with his leadership and game management qualities at the elite level of global rugby. In addition, Romani featured at the 2003 Rugby World Cup and was part of Fiji’s squad alongside well-known Fijian stars. Further, Rokini is a cousin of world famous Fijian rugby legend and 7’s coach Waisale Serevi.

Having donned the jersey for prestigious clubs and represented the country at various levels, Rokini transitioned seamlessly into coaching and mentoring roles. His philosophy focuses not only on physical fitness and skill but heavily on the mental aspect of the game.
During his new assignment as rugby consultant, Rokini is expected to work closely with the head coach, Sanath Matis, the backs coach, Chanaka Chandimal, and the support staff. His brief will likely involve analysing match play, devising strategic game plans, and providing mentorship to the senior players to ensure they perform to their potential when it matters most. The process will not be a daunting challenge, as Romani is reputed for his sharp tactical acumen and ability to shape up the talents of youths.
