SRI v BRU

Leon Perera scored the only goal of the match as Sri Lanka defeated Brunei 1-0 in their FIFA Friendly encounter at the Alpine Football Field in Thailand.

The game saw Sri Lanka end a 16-year winless drought against Brunei, that dated back to April 2009. That game saw Sri Lanka beat Brunei 5-1. The two most recent games in 2024, Sri Lanka lost 1-0 to Brunei.

Seeking to avenge the two defeats, Sri Lanka started off strongly dominating possession and territory. Sri Lanka hosting the game away from home, were unable to create clear chances and the one or two they did, the forwards could only find goalkeeper Mohamed Nyaring.

Brunei got just one shot on target but overall were lucky to go into half time without conceding a goal.

Half Time: Sri Lanka 0 – 0 Brunei

Abdullah Al Mutairi made two changes at half time, including bringing on the eventual goal scorer Leon Perera.

Sri Lanka continued what they did in the 1st half and finally found the goal they were searching for in the 56th minute. Sri Lanka attacked down the left wing where Dillon De Silva’s cross into the box found Leon Perera, whose left footed effort flew past a diving Nyaring into the bottom corner.

Sri Lanka could have scored a few more but looked somewhat rusty while they did give Remiyan Muthuccumaru his senior debut. Overall, Abdullah Al Mutairi would be pleased with the result heading into the big game against Chinese Taipei in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualification – 3rd Round in Colombo on 10th June.
