In a significant move for Hong Kong cricket, former Sri Lanka Test cricketer Kaushal Silva has been named the new head coach of the Hong Kong men’s national team. 

The announcement, made by Cricket Hong Kong, comes just weeks before the team’s Asia Cup campaign, where they are set to face Afghanistan in the tournament opener on 9th September in the United Arab Emirates.

This marks Silva’s first foray into international coaching, a milestone in his burgeoning post-playing career. 

Silva, 39, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. A gritty wicketkeeper-batter, he represented Sri Lanka in 39 Test matches between 2011 and 2018, scoring 2,099 runs at an average of 28.32, including three centuries.

His first-class career is even more impressive, amassing 13,932 runs in 209 matches with 41 hundreds, showcasing his consistency and resilience as an opener for the Sinhalese Sports Club and the National Cricket Team.
