Reigning champions and newly crowned Inter-club sevens winners Kandy Sports Club will represent the country in the first ever Asia Rugby Western Club Champions league which is scheduled to be played in Dubai mid-September.

The first of its kind, the Asian Rugby Western Club Champions league will feature leading clubs from the nations of Abu Dhabi, Kazakstan, Doha Qatar and Sri Lanka. The four countries will be represented by the top performers in each of their club rugby formats who battle it out against each other to decide the best out of Western Asia.

Speaking to ThePapare.com, Manager of the victorious Kandy Sorts Club mentioned that the same team that won the league title last year will tour Dubai in September and a few of the new transfers are expected to make their 15’s debut for Kandy on foreign soil.

Alongside Kandy Sports Club, Abu Dhabi will be represented by Saracens RFC, Kazakhstan by Almaty RFC & Doha by Doha RFC. The opening game of the first of the tournament is scheduled to take place on the 11th of September while the hill country lads will take the field against Almaty RFC on the following day.

The tournament will be worked off in a round robin format with each team playing each other and the leading team at the end of three games will take home the title.

The touring Kandy team will be led by the Sri Lankan skipper Fazil Marija and Coach Johanne Taylor is set to join the contingent in September. The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union is set to sponsor the tour.
