Johann Pieris

Johann Pieris became the second Sri Lankan to summit the world’s tallest mountain, reaching the peak of Mount Everest at 05.40am (SL time) today (22nd) and has now commenced his descend from the peak.

Johann was a part of the expedition that helped Jayanthi Kuru Uthumpala become the first Sri Lankan to summit Mount Everest back in 2016 but was unable to reach the summit as his oxygen tank malfunctioned and he had to turn back an agonizing 440m short of the peak. Despite the heartbreak, Johann was determined to finish what he started and not settle for a close enough finish as he got back to training for the cause throughout last year. He announced his attempt early this year with a campaign named ‘Climb Everest With Johann’ where the public could be a part of his journey by purchasing one of the steps he would take on the mountain for a mere Rs.100.

Having left Sri Lanka in early April, Johann spent much of his time at the Mount Everest Base Camp where he completed a number of trainings termed ‘rotations’, acclimatizing to the conditions during the ascent and the decent. Johann left the base camp on the 19th of May and was set to summit on the 23rd but his summit was advanced due to changing weather conditions.

Johann will now commence the decent which is considered to be more treacherous than the ascent and is expected to take up to two days before he reaches the base camp.

ThePapare.com is delighted for Johann for this achievement made through sheer perseverance and hope that he will have a safe decent.  Watch this space as we will bring you the latest from Johann’s journey.
