Joes retain Murali-Vaas trophy – Eagles shot out for 35

145

St. Josephs College Colombo managed to beat St. Anthony’s College Katugastota today by 8 wickets to retain the Murali-Vaas Challenge trophy in a match played at Darley road.

The Antonians batting in their first innings managed to score an average first innings score of 137 runs while the Josephians replied with 149/9 declared. The low scoring encounter saw both teams struggling to find the middle of the bat and the Eagles ultimately faltered in their second innings being bowled out for a substandard total of 35 runs. It was the lowest team total in the under 19 school cricket season for the year.

It was a good bowling performance by the Josephian bowler led by right arm off spin bowler Moditha Weerasinghe who ended with figures of 4/5. He was given a lot of support from Aravinda Akurugoda who finished with excellent figures of 4/2. The Antonian batsmen struggled to find their feet in the second innings and crumbled under the pressure at Darley road.

With 29 runs to get the Josephians eased their way through to score 32 runs for the loss of 2 wickets with opener Sadheera Samarawickrama guiding his team to victory with an unbeaten 18*.

The lads from Darley road who registered their first outright win of the season last week kept their momentum claiming their 2nd win for the season.
