Western Province North captain and vice-captain, Sammu Ashan and Jehan Daniel excelled with both bat and ball on Sunday as the second set of SLC Super 19 Provincial Tournament 2016 matches were commenced in Colombo and its suburbs.

Western Province North vs Uva Province

A total of 20 wickets fell on day one but Western Province North hold the advantage over Uva Province at Wesley College grounds.

After electing to bowl, Western Province North bowlers completely dominated proceedings as they restricted their opponents to only 138 runs. The Josephian fast-bowler Daniel and the Anandian off-spinner Ashan shared 5 wickets amongst them. Lower-order batsman Gayana Preethimal top-scored with a fighting 75-ball 42.

In reply, Western Province North amassed 238 for 9 before declaring their innings. Captain Sammu blasted a run-a-ball 58 which comprised 3 sixes and 5 fours while the 17-year old right-handed batsman from St. Joseph’s College, Daniel bludgeoned 7 sixes and 4 fours during his enthralling knock of 78 which came in 75 deliveries.

Opening bowlers, Gayana Preethimal and Kavishka Dinesh picked up 3 wickets apiece. Uvain their second essaywere 27 for 1 at stumps.

Uva – 138 all out in 52.2 overs: Gayana Preethimal 42, Avindu Theekshana 25, Sammu Ashan 3/48, Jehan Daniel 2/30, Samitha Ranga 2/20.

WP North – 238/9 declared in 41.3 overs: Sammu Ashan 58, Jehan Daniel 78, Helitha Vithanage 21, Kavishka Dinesh 3/50, Gayana Preethimal 3/35.

Uva (2nd inn) – 27/1 in 10 overs: Naveen Hasaranga 13, Helitha Vithanage 1/7.

Western Province Central vs North Western Province

North Western Province and Maliyadeva College captain, Damitha Silva picked up 3 wickets and scored 55 to help his team major honours on day one against Western Province Central at Colts grounds.

After opting to bat first, Western Province Central boys struggled against the disciplined bowling of North Western Province as they were bundled out for a mere 91 inside the first session of play. Left-arm spinner Damitha his partner-in-crime Wanitha Wanninayake claimed 3 wickets apiece. Last match’s centurion, Pathum Nissanka top-scored with only 14 runs.

In reply, North Western Province amassed 233 for 9 from their allotted 65 overs. Nipun Dhananjaya and Damitha Silva made 59 and 55 respectively while left-arm spinner Vimukthi Kulathunga picked up 3 wickets. Western Province Central negotiated the nervy one over before stumps.

WP Central – 91 all out in 24.5 overs: Sajith Vithanage 13, Sanjula Abeywickrama 13, Pathum Nissanka 14, Damitha Silva 3/8, Wanitha Wanninayake 3/21, Randeer Ranasinghe 2/27, Pasindu Manelka 2/34.

North Western – 233/9 in 65 overs: Nipun Dhananjaya 59, Damitha Silva 55, Kamesh Nirmal 25*, Randeer Ranasinghe 23, Vimukthi Kulathunga 3/47, Chathura Obeysekara 2/67, Manelkar De Silva 2/39.

WP Central (2nd inn) – 5 for no loss in 1 over.

Western Province South vs Eastern Province

Western Province South posted a mammoth 296 on the board on day one against Eastern Province at P. Sara Oval grounds.

After electing to bat first, the St. Sebastian’s all-rounder Asher Warnakulasuriya made a quick-fire 59 while Prince of Wales skipper Thilan Nimesh top-scored with a fluent 62. At the top of the order, Thomian left-hander Ravindu Kodituwakku contributed with 30 valuable runs. Mohommad Rasfas and R Thenurathan claimed 4 wickets apiece for the Easterners.

In their reply, De Mazenod College batsman Lasith Crosspulle and Dinesh Madusanka made 35 and 34 respectively to help Eastern Province get to a commendable score of 104 for 3 at close of play after Avishka Fernando struck twice with the new ball.

WP South – 296 all out in 64.1 overs: Asher Warnakulasuriya 59, Thilan Nimesh 62, Kamil Mishara 46, Nuwanindu Fernando 38, Ravindu Kodituwakku 30, Vishwa Chathuranga 25, Mohamed Rasfas 4/44, Rethnarajah Thenurathan 4/48.

Eastern – 104/3 in 33 overs: Lasith Croospulle 35*, Dinesh Madusanka 34*, Avishka Fernando 2/11.

North Central Province vs Southern Province

Amindu Udara’s unbeaten 95 helped Southern Province take stern control of their game against North Central Province at Surrey Village grounds in Maggona.

After being sent into bat first, North Central Province were restricted to only 147 runs. Captain Dasun Senevirathne from Nalanda College and Anandian AselSigera made 38 and 47 respectively. Senevirathne consumed 79 balls and hit 6 fours while Sigera smashed 5 fours and a six during his 103-ball knock.  For the Southerners, off-spinner Dilum Sudeera was the chief destroyer picking up 4 scalps.

In reply, Southern Province reached 194 for 4 in 42 overs at stumps. Opening batsman Udara remained unbeaten on 95 from 124 balls with 15 fours and a six while Kaveesha Dilranga and Ashen Bandara hit 35 and 25 respectively.

North Central – 147 all out in 57.3 overs: Dasun Senevirathne 38, Asel Sigera 47, Pubudu Bandara 21, Dilum Sudeera 4/37, Thilan Prashan 2/22, Hareen Buddhila 2/37.

Southern – 194/4 in 42 overs: AminduUdara 95*, KaveeshaDilranga 35, Ashen Bandara 25.
