The Sri Lankan Golf union together with the global banking giant HSBC will host the International Junior Golf Championship for the second consecutive year among Asian countries Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, Malaysia and Thailand on the 1st and the 2nd of August. The tournament will bring together a total of around 350 students from across Asia.

The event initiated by SLGU Junior subcommittee has an aim of raising the bar of Junior Golf standards in Sri Lanka by inviting international talent to compete locally thereby providing much-needed exposure to our junior golfers. It is hoped that a tournament of this nature will inspire our juniors by creating a platform for potential future national representation.

Mr. Harsha Abeywickrama stated “We are delighted to be once again having the junior internationals in Sri Lanka for the 2nd year running and we equally hope that the invited teams will enjoy our country and gain as much exposure playing here in Sri Lanka.”

All current junior golfers in the country will have the opportunity to participate in the event as the individual event is categorized into age groups and will be held on the 1st of August. On the following day an International Junior Golf ‘Team Championship’ for the SLGU Trophy will be conducted by the Golf Union with each of the countries fielding a team comprising of 2 boys and 2 girls. The terms of play will be on a format structured on a hybrid version of similar international team events such as the Asia Pacific Golf Team Championship and the Ryder Cup in the USA.

Mark Prothero, the CEO of HSBC Sri Lanka and Maldives spoke on the occasion “We were delighted to initiate Sri Lanka’s inaugural partnership with SLGU which engaged over 300 children across 5 countries and are even more delighted to extend an experience of a lifetime for the Winner of the HSBC Junior open and the Junior Premiere winner as they will get two access passes for the prestigious 148th edition of the Open scheduled at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland in 2019 for which HSBC is a key patron.”
