Indo -Sri Lankan tussles at the Colombo Championship

An Indo Sri Lankan clash will be expected in the Men’s open semifinals of the 100th Colombo Championships where national seed Thangarajah Dineshkanthan is set to meet India’s top ranked player Ashwin Vijayragavan.

The 25 year old Ashwin who cleared his path to the semifinals defeating top 3 seed Yasith De Silva after a close match in the second game with scores reading 6-1,6-4 will be facing the cream of Sri Lankan tennis in tomorrow’s semifinal encounter which is scheduled to be played at the SLTA clay courts at 12.30 p.m.

In the other semi final game is 18 year old Nishangan Nadaraja who will competing against Pakistani Heera Ashiq. Nadarajah who got the qualification to the top defeating P Athauda 6-2,1-0 will have an easy contest ahead when he faces the Pakistani top seed player. Both semi-finals will be worked off tomorrow at the SLTA clay courts while the final encounter is scheduled for the weekend.

Earlier in the day, Under 18 top seed Nethmi Waduge made it to the finals with the other semi -final yet to be played. Waduge will be facing either Anika Seneviratna or Supeshala Colombathanthri in the Under 18 final.

Anika Senviratna also qualifies for the Girls Under 16 Singles defeating her opponent Kaveesha Thevarepperuma in a whitewash game 6-0,6-0 with the remaining quarterfinals still to be worked off.

The veterans age groups saw a start on the 24th and is scheduled to conclude by Saturday. The other exciting contest which is ongoing is the Wheelchair open title which includes the top Sri Lankan veterans such as Upali Rajakaruna and Gamini Dissanayaka who are likely to end up in the finals.
