Malintha Yapa and Indika Tiron were the only pair that was able to win at least a match at the 20th Asian Beach Tour Samila Open 2019 in Songkla, Thailand.

Men’s & Women’s teams for Samila Open

Sri Lanka will be participating in the 20th Asian Beach Tour Samila Open 2019 …

The pair bagged the only win for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka had two teams each from the men’s & women’s categories participating in the tournament organized by the Asian Volleyball Confederation. The women were captained by Dinesha Prasadini while the men were captained by Malintha Yapa.

The women’s team members comprised of Kasuni Tharuka, Deepika Bandara & Chathurika Weerasinghe. They were coached by Priyantha Rajapaksha. The men’s team members comprised of Indika Tiron, Anjana Sandeepana and Ashen Rashmika. The men’s teams were coached by Jude Mahesh Perera.

Men’s Category

The two men’s teams had to come through the qualifying round where only Tiron and Yapa made it through winning 21-9 & 21-15 against Ahmed and Ali from Maldives. Ashen and Anjana lost to Kangkon and Adisorn of Thailand 21-17 & 23-21.

Tiron and Yapa met Raoufi and Mirzaali from Iran in group G of the main draw. The Iranian pair won the 1st set 21-14 but the Sri Lankans battled back to win the next set 18-21. However, in the must win 3rd set the islanders were not able to match the Iranians, who eventually finished in 3rd place, as they lost 15-10.

In their next match in the group the duo faced off against the Japanese pair of Gottsu and Ageba but lost 21-14 & 21-18 after a relatively keen tussle and had to bow out from the competition. The Japanese pair finished 4th in the tournament.   

Women’s Category

The two women’s teams came straight to the main draw but lost each of their two matches badly. Deepika and Kasuni lost 21-12 & 21-14 to Kou & Liu from Chinese Taipei and 21-6 & 21-12 to the Australian pair of Weller and Kendall.

Dinesha and Chathurika lost 21-10 & 21-14 to Bell and Ngauamo from Australia while in the next group game lost 21-18 & 21-14 to Yu & Pan from Chinese Taipei.
