The visiting Sri Lanka ‘A’ team were handed a humiliating 10-wicket defeat in the 2nd Unofficial ODI at the Union Gymkhana Ground in Belgaum today by the India ‘A’ team.

After falling short by 48 runs in the opening game of the series at the same venue, Sri Lanka were put in to bat by Indian skipper Ishan Kishan. Niroshan Dickwella and Sadeera Samarawickrama, who once were the openers of the Sri Lanka national team, once again failed to give a good start for the tourists as they were separated in the 3rd over.

Gaikwad’s unbeaten 187 leaves Sri Lanka ‘A’ wrecked

India A recorded a 48-run win against their Sri Lankan counterparts at KSCA Stadium, Belagavi in the first unofficial ODI of…….

Opening pacers for the hosts, Ishan Porel and Tushar Deshpande caused early havoc in the Lankan batting line-up as they picked up 3 wickets in the first 6 overs, giving away just 16 runs. Sri Lanka ‘A’ skipper Ashan Priyanjan then followed the openers and Bhanuka Rajapaksa to the dressing room as he was dismissed by Shivam Dube in the 10th over.

Joining Shehan Jayasuriya, the centurion in the first match, Kamindu Mendis helped him add 22 runs for the 5th wicket to take Sri Lanka from 27/4 towards the 50-run mark. However, Mendis too perished as he was caught by wicket keeper Ishan Kishan off a Dube delivery for 10 runs.

Dasun Shanaka then scored 20 runs off 19 deliveries to build a 32-run stand for the 6th wicket before he was undone by leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, proving his vulnerability against spin once again. Batting at number 8, Ishan Jayaratne then stood up for Sri Lanka ‘A’ with a superb 142-run partnership with Jayasuriya.

Resuming from where he left in the previous game, Jayasuriya kept scoring runs although it was not in his usual pace. The 139-ball knock of 101 was eventually ended by Deepak Hooda as Sri Lanka managed to bat out the allotted 50 overs. On the other end, Jayaratne remained unbeaten on 79 as Sri Lanka finished on a modest total of 242/7.

In-form Ruturaj Gaikward who thumped the hapless Sri Lankan bowlers in the first game with an unbeaten 187, went on to score his 2nd consecutive century in India A’s run-chase. His opening partner, Shubman Gill also scored 109 to redeem himself from the failure in the previous game.

Gaikward remained unbeaten on 125 while Gill retired hurt on 109 with India almost reaching the required target. In bowling for Sri Lanka ‘A’ all 7 bowlers used were expensive and none could stop the free-flowing Indian batsmen. The 3rd match of the series will be played on the 10th at the same venue.
