An exceptional all-round performance by D.S.Senanayake College helped them to defeat Dharmaraja College Kandy on first innings at a traditional encounter that was played at DS grounds this Friday and Saturday.
DS’s total of 250 for the 1st innings comprised a well-constructed 75-run knock by Thimila Vidyasekara. Middle order batsman Pasindu Adithya notched-up a brilliant quick-fire half century while Sri Lanka under 19 opener Kaveen Bandara got on to a flying start and added 41 runs from his bat. Rajans spinners hampered the hosts’ batting as right arm off spinner Gihan Vitharana sent four batsmen back to the dressing room while Rukmal Dissanayake and Asmitha Rajapaksha grabbed 3 wickets each.
DS’s bowling was too good for the lads from Hill country since they were curtailed to a mere 82 runs for their 1st innings in return, enabling Gihan Vitharana to top-score with 35 runs. Right arm paceman Yureshka De Silva claimed a 5-wicket haul for DS.
Dharmaraja College batted once again as they were unable to avoid the follow-on with the cheap runs on the batting card in their reply. They bounced back well in the second innings and pinned up a satisfactory 225 runs on the score-board for the loss of 8 wickets before the declaration was made. Rajans’ innings was built up on the back of Supun Vithanachchi who chipped in with a marathon 70 and Asmitha Rajapaksha who stood steady at one end anchoring the middle order. Sachin Bandara captured 4 scalps out of the 8 fell and confirmed that DS was on top by securing the first innings honours at the end of day two.
