Sri Lanka thump hosts Malaysia to kick off campaign in style

Sri Lanka began their ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup 2025 campaign with a resounding 139-run victory over tournament hosts Malaysia in the 7th match of the edition, played today (19th January) at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia captain Nur Dania Syuhada elected to bowl first after winning the toss. The Sri Lankan openers gave their team a flying start, scoring 52 runs in the powerplay. Sanjana Kavindi, in particular, was in explosive form during that period, smashing 30 runs off just 13 deliveries, including six boundaries.

No. 3 batter Dahami Sanethma anchored the innings and became the first half-centurion of the tournament. She scored 55 runs, striking five fours, while Hiruni Hansika contributed a brisk 28 off 21 balls. The duo shared a vital 49-run partnership for the 4th wicket, helping Sri Lanka post a challenging total of 162 for 6 in their 20 overs. Siti Nazwah was the pick of the Malaysian bowlers, taking 2 for 31.

Sri Lankan bowlers proved too strong for the Malaysian batters, skittling them out for just 23 runs in 14.1 overs — the lowest-ever score in tournament history. None of the Malaysian batters managed to reach double figures, with six players dismissed without scoring.

Left-arm spinner Chamodi Praboda starred for Sri Lanka, delivering stunning figures of 3 for 5 in her four overs, including two maidens. Limansa Thilakarathna and skipper Manudi Nanayakkara also chipped in with two wickets each.

Sri Lanka Women U19 will take on West Indies Women U19 in their second Group A fixture on 21st January, starting at 8.00 AM Sri Lanka Time.
