Havelock Sports Club looking to break Kandy’s hoo-doo once again

The rugby club down Park Road Colombo will enter into the Dialog Rugby League contest this season in its 102nd year of existence with league title contention.

Building on the foundation set by Joachim, the Havelock Club joined to play competitive rugby in the year 1920

A breeding ground for schoolboy talent, the Park club team won their first Clifford cup in the year 1951.

The golden era for the iconic Pink Jersey’s was from 1960 to 1970 where the club won 9 league titles.

Fast forward to the 21st century, it was the efforts of Asanga Seneviratne that saw the Park Club getting a facelift upgrading the club to a state of the art stadium and in 2013, Havelock Sports broke Kandy Sports Club’s 14 year old hoo-doo winning the important Dialog Rugby League crown.

Last year, the Havelock Sports Club missed out on a league title losing to Kandy Sports Club on two occasions. The team ended up emerging runners up last year.

After an unfortunate result in the 2016/17 season, the Havelock Sports Club management has handed over the coaching duties to veteran coach Sanath Martis who has been responsible for many schools rugby titles over the past few years to change the fortunes of the Park club.
