Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs named himself on the bench for his side’s home game with Hull City on Tuesday, potentially setting the scene for a farewell appearance.
Giggs, 40, will step down as interim manager after Sunday’s final Premier League game at Southampton and his contract as a player is also due to expire.
Writing in the match-day programme, Giggs said: “There have been times this season when I have felt that it wouldn’t be right for me to play on next year, but then after other games — like the win over Olympiakos — I have had the urge to keep going.
“I have honestly not made my mind up either way, and there are a lot of things to consider — not least, of course discussing the matter with the new manager here at Old Trafford.”
Giggs, who made his United debut in March 1991, is United’s all-time record appearance-maker and most decorated player.
He was put in charge of first-team affairs after David Moyes was sacked last month and United are yet to appoint a full-time manager.
Giggs was joined on the bench by United captain Nemanja Vidic, who is due to join Inter Milan on a free transfer in the close season after eight years of service at Old Trafford.
Giggs sprang a major surprise with his team selection, meanwhile, by naming unheralded young forwards Tom Lawrence, 20, and James Wilson, 18, in his starting XI.
