Defeating the winners of yesterdays, Ganthalawa MV won the 44th TB Jaya memorial boxing tournament this year, 2013. The meet was held at the Saranath Maha vidyalaya Kuliyapitiya from the 14th to 17th June 2013.
The participation was of higher level in comparison to previous tournaments. And also the spectators. The enthusiastic school boxers were very keen at the meet. There was intense competition exhibited by these youngsters. The meet was of higher standard than the previous meets.
The meet was conducted with high standards making the spectators witness high class boxing in school level boxing meet. The tournament was held with the participation of 219 boxers from 48 schools around the island, including the northern region. This increased the enthusiasm of the spectators and the intensity of the participators.
Following an intense competition Ganthalawa Maha Vidyalaya reached the victory stand scoring the highest of 27 marks, acquiring their position as the champions of the tournament. Ganthalawa MV achieved a boxing challenge trophy for first time after they started boxing six years ago and it created history in school boxing. The runner-up was secured by Vidyartha College Kandy scoring 24 points and been the second highest of the tournament, followed by Medankara MV Horana obtaining the third place with a score of 22 marks.
With his swift foot works and straight punches, S. Chandu of St. Sylvester’s college emerged as the Best Boxer of the tournament whilst H A S Sumuduranga of the hoisting school Saranath MV was awarded as the best looser.
The participation of a higher number of contestants had filled the days with more bouts than ever before. This tournament indicated blooming of not one, but more Manjus!
