Galle to host ODI cricket after 17 years

One Day International (ODI) cricket will return to Galle International Cricket Stadium after 17 years with the start of the Zimbabwe tour of Sri Lanka later this month.

After completing their series’ in Scotland and Netherland, Zimbabwe team led by leg-spinner Greame Cremer will play their first ODI against number 8 ranked, Sri Lanka on 30th June at Galle Stadium followed by the second game after two days at the same venue.

Teams will then travel to Hambanthota to play the remaining three ODIs to complete the five-match series before travelling back to R. Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo to play the only Test match.

Sri Lanka last hosted a Test match at Khettarama in 2013 against Bangladesh while ODI cricket was last played at Galle Stadium in 2000 during the triangular series between Sri Lanka, South Africa and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had not used the services of Mahinda Rajapaksha International Cricket Stadium in Sooriyawewa, Hambanthota since July, 2015 and currently Sri Lanka Army are renovating the stadium which was built at cost of Rs 4.2 billion, had seen only 11 ODI matches and nine T20I games.

3rd ODI – 6th July – Hambanthota (Day)
4th ODI – 8th July – Hambanthota (Day)

Only Test – 14th to 18th July – R. Premadasa
