The 42nd edition of the glamorous ‘Dialog Mercantile Rugby Sevens tournament’ will get underway next weekend at the CR&FC.
The tournament will kick off on the 23rd of November (Friday) and will go on till the 25th. Twenty two games will be played during day one of the competition which will kick off at 2.00pm and go on until 8.00pm under lights. Forty six games will be played during the 2nd day (start time 8.30am) and 25 matches will take place on the final day (start time 9.00am).
Out of the 44 teams which will compete this year, 9 teams will compete in the Cup and Plate segments. The teams which will turn out for the Cup and Plate segment are, MAS “A”, Nation Lanka,
Access Group, Commercial Bank, Seylan Bank, Sampath Bank, John Keells “A”, VIS Broadcasting and Dialog “A”. The criteria for seeding is a team needs to filed more than 03 ‘A’ division Club Players (i.e. 3+ players) to be in contention for the cup category.
This year 7 teams make their debut appearance in the tournament with CL Synergy, Oasis Marketing,
Alliance Finance, Venture Ceylon Holdings, VIS Broadcasting, Millennium IT and Amana Bank making up the numbers.
MAS group, John Keels Group, Nation Lanka, HSBC, Dialog and HDPL will field 2 teams each.
Round up of last year’s tournament
The 41st Mercantile rugby sevens tournament saw 41 teams take part with MAS holdings winning it for the 2nd year running by beating newcomers Nation Lanka Finance by 20 points to 14 in the cup final.
The third place playoff was a closely contested one with Dialog taking 2010 finalist’s John Keells, with the former winning the game 12-10. The Plate category was won by Access groups which got the better of Commercial bank in the final game 24-7.
Entrust was able to lay their hands on the bowl beating John Keells ‘B’ 22 points to 7 while Hemas beat Suntel 12-7 to clinch the Shield.
