The Judo Championship of the 49th National Sports Festival, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Department of Sports Development, concluded successfully at the Royal MAS Indoor Sports Complex in Colombo 07.
The defending champions, Central Province, showcased their strength, spirit, and skill—going bigger, better, and bolder—to clinch both the men’s and women’s championships with ease.
The overall championship also went to Central Province, which secured an impressive medal haul of 11 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze medals. In the men’s event, Central Province made a clean sweep by winning all the gold medals. In the women’s event, they claimed gold medals in four weight classes, falling short in only three categories.
Meanwhile, fighters from the North Western and Uva Provinces secured overall second and third places, respectively, but remained well behind in the medal table.
Sri Lanka Air Force member and veteran judoka Chamara Nuwan Dharmawardana—who also shared the honour of serving as Sri Lanka’s flag bearer at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—was named the best men’s judo player of the event.
K.L.W.N.K. Jayaweera of Central Province, the gold medallist in the women’s 57 kg weight category, emerged as the best women’s judo player of the event.
