Being the first Sri Lankan to achieve qualification timing for the Olympics in swimming, Matthew Abeysinghe looks confident of taking Sri Lanka swimming to a higher standard in the upcoming Summer Olympics that is set to kick off in Rio this August.

After gaining qualification at the swimming trials held in Hong Kong earlier this month, Matthew Abeysinghe will be competing directly in the qualifying heats of the Men’s 100m Freestyle event having received an Olympic B grade qualification.

Matthew rose to the spotlight in the recently concluded 2016 South Asian Games winning 10 medals that included 7 gold, 2 silver and a single bronze medal. Being the only Sri Lankan to qualify for the FINA World Championships that were held in Kazan last year, he also claims 18 national records under his name.

Describing his Olympic achievement as something he yearned for since he started swimming at the age of four and now he is on the verge of making his dream a reality.
