Army, Holy Family, Maliyadeva Balika & Musaeus win

Army SC won the A Division Women’s Championship while Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala won the U19 championship in the 2018 ‘Eva’ All Island Open Netball Tournament at the Air Force Grounds, Colombo 2.

Maliyadeva Balika Vidyala and Musaeus College won the U17 & U15 champions respectively.

The tournament was conducted by the Western Province Netball Association and was sponsored by International Cosmetics (Pvt) Ltd for the 13th time.

The tournament was played under four Divisions; A Division, B Division, Schools’ Division and the Veterans Division. A Division was comprised of Open Women’s & Open Men’s categories while the B Division only comprised of Open Women’s category.

Schools’ Division was conducted under three age groups; U15, U17 and U19 and the Veterans Division was for ‘Over 40 Women’.

‘A’ Division (Women) – EVA Challenge Trophy

Army SC defeated Expo Lanka 72-58 to clinch the ‘A’ Division Women’s Championship. It was Army SC who dominated the game from the beginning, resulting in a comprehensive win.

Shereen Nugera of Expo Lanka was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the division while Tharuka Ashwini of the Army SC was crowned as the Netball Queen.

Schools’ Division (U19) – The Speed Birds Challenge Trophy

Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala became the U19 Schools’ Division Champions as they defeated Holy Cross College, Gampaha 26-12 in the finals.

The champions defeated Girls’ High School, Kandy 11-9 in the semi-final while Holy Cross College defeated Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya 15-13 in their semi-final.

Pabasara Tennekoon of Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala who played well throughout the tournament was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the age category.

Schools’ Division (U17) – Western Province Challenge Trophy

Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala won the U17 championship defeating Gothami Balika Vidyalaya 16-13 in the final.

Gothami Balika won their semi-final against Hillwood College, Kandy while Maliyadeva Balika defeated hometown rivals Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala 18-17.

Sajani Yapa of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya was named as the Most Valuable Player in the U17 category.

Schools’ Division (U15) – Western Province Challenge Trophy

Musaeus College came on top defeating Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala in a 1-point thriller 14-13 to win the U15 championship.

Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala defeated Kirillawala Central College 15-3 in the semi-final while Musaeus College won 8-5 against Girls’ High School, Kandy in the other semi-final.

Nethangi Gunarathne of Musaeus College was adjudged the Most Valuable Player.

‘A’ Division (Men) – Malcom Andree Memorial Challenge Trophy

Police SC defeated Net Fire Sports Club from Colombo 14-9 to grab the Championship of the Men’s Division.

Net Fire defeated last year’s champions United SC 33-27 in the semi-final while Police SC defeated Samagi SC from Anuradhapura 27-10 in the other semi-final.

Prasanna Aloysius of Net Fire Sports Club won the award for the Most Valuable Player of the Division and Bandara Samarakoon of Police SC was crowned as the Netball King.

‘B’ Division (Women) – Ulrika Fernando bar – Kumarakulasingham Memorial Challenge Trophy

Net Fire SC won the ‘B’ Division Women’s Championship after a comfortable win over Campbell Park SC in the finals 16-11.

The semi-finals saw Net Fire SC defeating Jayawardenapura University 11-2 and Campbell Park defeating United SC 14-10.

Malki Dilshani of Net Fire SC was awarded as the Most Valuable Player for her performances.

‘Veterans’ (Women) – The Western Province Challenge Trophy

Speed Birds Sports Club won the Championship of the Veterans division defeating Panthers comfortably in the finals 14-3.

Champa Perera of Speed Birds SC won the award for the Most Valuable Player of the Veterans Division.
