An eighteen year old schoolboy rugby player who collapsed during practices in Kandy was declared deceased at the Kandy General Hospital, short while ago (1st).

A grade 12 student of Trinity College Kandy Bathiya Ekanayake,  collapsed suddenly during the pre-season training that took place  in Pallekelle, yesterday (30th).

The coaching staff and the master in charge were quick to react rushing the unconscious player to the hospital where he was immediately admitted into the  Intensive Care Unit.

After fighting for his life for over 12 hours, he finally lost his battle this afternoon.

A budding rugby player, young  Bathiya was an energetic prop forward through his junior rugby days. Having a dream to play for the 1st XV team, he had joined training ahead of the 2018 season and according to the coaches was a prospect for the future.

“I am sure that the whole Trinity family will join with me in grief and sorrow at the tragic loss of a young Trinitian with so much to live for. Please keep Bhathiya and his family in your prayers and join me in expressing our deepest sympathies and condolences to his parents, sister and family” added Andrew Fowler-watt; Principal of Trinity College on the untimely death.

It is a sad day for the entire Sri Lankan rugby community as we mourn this tragic death.
