The Under 18 Schools Sevens tournament commenced today at the Race Course stadium. 24 teams were expected to play in 8 groups. This will also be a tournament in which the selectors get to have a look at the under 18 lads who will be eligible for the Asia under 18 Sevens Tournament to be held later this year.
Isipathana College, S.Thomas’ College Mt.Lavinia and St.Peter’s College didn’t take part in this sevens tournament while Lalith Athulathmudali College , Kingswood College, Prince of Wales College and Dharmaraja College pulled out of the tournament after the tournament draw.
Pre-tournament favourites Science College hammered St. Thomas’ College Matale 62 points to nil in the opening game of the day. In the second game Science College demolished Mahanama 76 points to nil.
St. Anthony’s College Kandy impressed with two dominant victories against Royal College Panadura 67-00 and 26 -12 against Vidyaratha College.
Surprise package of the day 01 was Piliyandala MMV as they defeated the much fancied Zahira College 12 points to 07.
Except for the above encounter and the Mahanama College and St. Thomas’ College Matale which ended in nail-biting 24 all draw, all other games were one-sided.
Royal, Trinity, Piliyandala MMV and St. Joseph’s had only one game to play and they won it comprehensively as they received a walkover in the other game which meant all four teams topped their groups .
Science, Wesley, St. Anthony’s and DS Senanayake topped their respective groups by winning both their games easily.
