The 2016 tennis local circuit officially saw a start last Friday, the 22nd of January with the commencement of the Tamil Union Open Tennis Ranking Tournament conducted by the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club.
The tournament that is pledged under the Sri Lanka Tennis Association, is a ‘C’ grade tournament and will be held at the clay courts of the P. Sara Stadium in Wanathamulle.
Organized for the third consecutive year, the tournament intends to give the youngsters a fresh start for the 2016 season. A total of eight events are on the listing with a total of 211 players signed up to play in the first tournament of the year. An interesting sight to witness is the large number of participants enlisted for the Boys under 10 & 14 section giving indications that there would be quite a few newcomers to the local ranking circuit.
The tournament has progressed onto its quarterfinal stages in most of its events and the decisive semi-finals and finals of the age groups are expected to take place later in the week.
The tournament is sponsored by 3G Sports Online and will continue till the 31st of this month.
