St.Joseph Vas and Galigamuva MMV clinches the U18 titles

  • DSI Super Sport Schools Volleyball Championship U16 Boy's Champions - St. Xavier's College

After a break of two years, DSI had come forward once again to stage a national school level volleyball tournament, ‘DSI Super Sports 2016’.

The district level competition was held from 07th March 2016 to 6th June 2016, whereas the national level competition was held from the 20th of June 2016 to 26th of June 2016.

The much awaited finale was held on the 15th and 16th of July 2016 at the National Youth Service Center, Maharagama.

For this tournament, 3300 teams and over 40,000 competitors participated under the age categories; under 14, 16 and 18.

The final results are as follows:

Under 18 Girls

The finalists were none other than Naththandiya Dammissara MMV and Galigamuwa MMV. Dammissara MMV is known to be one of the leading schools in the field of volleyball when compared to the rest; however Galigamuwa MMV managed to grab the title in straight sets.

In a one sided final Galigamuwa MMV won the three sets 25-7, 25-13 and 25-13 to win the championship.

First Place: Galigamuva MMV
Second Place: Naththandiya  Dammissara MMV
Third Place: Hungama Vijayabaha Jathika College

Under 18 Boys

Naththandiya Dammissara MMV had to once again be satisfied with 2nd place as Wennappuwa St.Joseph Vas grabbed the championship in a thrilling 5 sets.

At the start of the match, Dhammissara MMV managed to serve the ball well to the opponents, however within a matter of few minutes, St.Joseph managed to score enough to win the first round 20-25.

However in the second round, Dhammissara MMV managed to rise back up winning 25-22.

The third round which followed, St.Joseph Vas was able to go up 2-1 winning the 3rd set 25-19.

Dhammissara lads won the 4th set 25-21 to set up a deciding 5th set.

It was St.Joseph Vas who raced through winning the 5th set 15-6 for the championship.

Under 16 Girls

Both Aanamaduwa Mahauswewa Rathnapala MV and Galigamuwa MMV qualified for the final round to battle against each other for the title. All five rounds of the match continued to spark the enthusiasm of the spectators.

However, Rathnapala MV managed to beat Galigamuwa MMV amidst the difficulties that arose in order to grab the title winning in 5 sets; 28-26, 19-25, 25-10, 23-25 & 15-03 .

The finalist under this age category who qualified were the teams of St.Xavior and Dammissara MMV.

This match concluded as St.Xavior claimed victory by defeating Dammissara MMV 25-17, 21-25, 25-20 & 25-19
