A aggressive Thangarajah Dineshkanthan stormed into the Colombo Championships open singles after a close contest over Thanveer Ashiq.

The penultimate days of the Sri Lanka’s premiere clay court tennis championships tends to be the most exciting days of the tournament with Sri Lanka’s top seeds battling it out in the knock out stages.

The highly anticipated Men’s Open singles quarterfinal game between Sri Lanka’s top seed player Dinehskanthan and #5 ranker Thanveer Ashiq started off in a monotonous note with Dineshkanthan getting major honors in the first set winning it 6-1. The second set seemed to be more competitive as Thanveer Ashiq gave a good contest to his counterpart, finishing the set 6-4.

One of the biggest upsets in the tournament was the second quarter final of the Men’s open where top 3 seed Yasith De Silva had to face defeat over Ashwin Vijayaragavan. Ashwin’s win over De Silva was 6-1,6-4 game win as he will face Dineshkanthan in the first semi final.

National title holder Amritha Muttiah had it easy in the quarters beating Hasindhi Lokuge 6-0,6-1 to advance to the Semi’s where she will face the 18 year old Thisuri Molligoda. The second semi final will be between Anika Seneviratne and second seed Nethmi Waduge.

With both Men’s and Women’s semi finals being worked off today, the Finals of the open category will be held on Saturday the 27th of June 2015.
