Dilantha Malagamuwa, Sri Lanka’s most successful race car driver, has received sponsorship from the Government of Sri Lanka for his upcoming racing event, the ‘Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe – Am 2021’.

Malagamuwa started off his Racing career back in 1982, after being encouraged to take up the sport by his family, especially his sisters. However, despite starting his racing journey on bikes, Malagamuwa transitioned into cars and thereon began his legacy. His journey in racing led him to reside in Japan where he set numerous records. In 1997 Dilantha Malagamuwa became the first non-Japanese Asian to compete in the Japan top level Formula Nippon.

From thereon, he has participated in many races, and made it to the podium regularly. A few of his notable victories have come in the Japan N1 Championship, Malaysia Super Car Series, Asian Le Mans and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asian series. Unfortunately for Malagamuwa, all his achievements have been financed by himself or his private sponsors. Despite raising the Sri Lankan flag up high around the globe, the funding in the sport has not been a priority in the past.

But, with the arrival of the new government under Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Malagamuwa’s appointment to the National Sports Council, he is set to receive a much-deserved sponsorship. Malagamuwa announced the sponsorship via his official Facebook Page, stating “For the first time in 36 years, the government is set to sponsor me at my next race”.

Malagamuwa was particularly thankful to the Prime Minister, as well as newly appointed Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Hon. Namal Rajapakse, Hon. Prasanna Ranathunga, Minister of Tourism & Aviation along with the head of Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Kirmali Fernando, for their unconditional support

The sponsorship will allow Malagamuwa to focus more of his time training and making sure his racing academy ‘Dilango Racing’ produces more quality race car drivers in the future.
