The Dialog Schools Rugby League returns today (12th June) in what could be a season defining week for some teams. Let’s dive deeper into the games and see exactly what’s at stake.
Plate Segment
St. Joseph’s College vs St. Anthony’s College
The boys from Darley Road welcome the Eagles to the home of rugby to kick off this week’s action. The Josephians enter this one as firm favourites after a polished performance against the Thomians last week, they now sit pretty at the top of the table and are looking like favourites to clinch the Plate Championship. The Antonians will be hurting after a narrow defeat last week. Conditions dictate a big battle upfront as the two heaviest packs in the Plate segment go head to head.
Prediction – St. Joseph’s College
Thurstan College vs Sri Sumangala College
A high stakes battle at the Sugathadasa. Especially for Sri Sumangala, as another defeat here could spell curtains for their title aspirations. On the other hand, Thurstan will be buoyant after a solid defensive shift led to a crucial away win last week and will look to build on that platform.
Prediction – Thurstan College win
Ananda College vs S. Thomas’ College
A disappointing season for the Thomians won’t get any easier when they travel to Rajagiriya to take on a resurgent Anandian outfit. Ananda go up a level when they play at home, and have proven to be a tough away fixture for even the best of teams. When taking form and structure into consideration, the Maroons arguably take the favourites tag for this one.
Prediction – Ananda College win
Bowl Segment
Prince of Wales College vs Kingswood College
Probably the easiest game to call this week. Both teams have been playing at completely different levels this season, with the Randles Hill team looking like favourites to clinch the Bowl Championship. The Cambrians have had a tough time adjusting to the top division and will need a miracle to save them from the drop.
Prediction – Kingswood College win
Mahanama College vs Lumbini College
A crucial game between two teams who are in danger of relegation. Both teams will be fancying their chances and will need maximum points from this game to give themselves a small cushion. Mahanama College have played with more structure this season however the newcomers have talented backs that can run from anywhere. Expect a tight game and a fun watch at Police Park.
Prediction- Lumbini College win
Science College vs D.S Senanayake College
Arguably the closest game in the Bowl Segment this week between two teams with contrasting styles of play. However, Science College’s forward play has been a breath of fresh air this season, especially their work off the lineout. On the other hand, the Dons have looked way off colour this season despite notching up back to back wins. D.S Senanayake College have the better team on paper, however form and home conditions will favour the Mount Lavinia side
Prediction – Science College win
Cup Segment
Isipathana College vs St. Peter’s College
One of the most heated rivalries in schools rugby reignites at Havelock Park. What has consistently been a league decider over previous seasons, is now a fight to stay alive in the league. Both these teams will know that another defeat would put a massive dent in their title credentials. The Green Machine have all the advantage, fresh off a massive win and in front of their home crowd. Having coached most of these players over the past few seasons, Sanath Martis will know exactly how to hurt this Peterite team. For the Bamba Brigade, this game is all about redemption and getting their season back on track.
Prediction – Isipathana College win
Zahira College vs Wesley College
Zahira College scalped another big fish last week, putting in a massive shift to turn a ten point deficit in the second half to overcome the unbeaten Peterites. Wesley College are wounded, suffering their second defeat at the hands of Trinity College. The Double Blues have failed to hit their mark in the league so far. Expect this game to be won and lost up front, with both teams heavily reliant on their forwards and set pieces. On form, the Tankers come into this one as the favourites.
Prediction – Zahira College win
Royal College vs Trinity College
The traditional Bradby rivals lock horns for the second time this season. The Trinitians are sitting pretty at the top of the league standings, and will look to put in another polished performance to get six points closer to their second title in as many seasons. Royal will be looking for revenge after their embarrassing defeat in the knockout final. Playing at home, they will look to make this as tough as possible for the Trinitians.
Prediction – Trinity College win
