Science College dominate Lumbini in Bowl Segment thriller by marching away from relegation danger

Dialog Schools' Rugby League 2026 - Round 2 (Bowl Segment), Science College vs Lumbini College

2

The Bowl Segment of the ongoing Dialog School’s Rugby League 2026 served up another gripping spectacle at Havelock Park today (07th June), played out in front of a vibrant, packed crowd. In a high-octane encounter that lived up to its pre-match hype, Science College delivered a masterclass in dominance, securing a commanding 26 – 10 victory over Lumbini College. The win serves as a massive statement of intent, propelling the Science College another step away from the looming threat of relegation.

The game burst into life right from the whistle. Lumbini started the game with a lovely high-hanging kickoff, and straight away Science made a fumble, resulting in a lineout in favor of Lumbini. But Science College, keen to assert their authority, did not waste any time. After a few minutes, Science got a lineout throw near the whitewash as Lumbini gave away an early penalty. Then Science attacked with a well-set maul, but somehow Lumbini managed to bring the players on to the ground. But their joy didn’t last long as the huge skipper of Science, Demitha Silva, barged his way over the whitewash to draw first blood and set the tone for the encounter. Place kicker Pahan Nesadu nailed the easy conversion by adding extras. (SC 07 – 00 LC)

Later, Science went for a punt at the midway mark, and Lumbini was just able to secure the ball from chases near the try line. But they committed a cardinal error by trying to run from inside their own in-goal area. The scoring opportunity was offered on a silver platter as Lumbini made a knock-on on a loose pass at the in-goal area. After receiving a prime scoring chance with a 5-meter scrum, Science needed only a single pass. The powerful center Malintha Marasinghe spotted a weakness in defense in the left corner and scored from the blindside by taking a couple of tacklers on him. (SC 12 – 00 LC)

As the first half progressed, Science College turned the screw, launching wave after wave of fierce attacks and applying tremendous pressure on the Lumbini defense. There Lumbini’s defensive frailties were exposed once again. The lads from Mt. Lavinia looked unstoppable and advanced deep into Lumbini territory with a brilliant pick and drive passage of play. Though Science College crossed the try line, Lumbini did well by preventing the grounding. Just after, the referee consulted the assistant referee and gave a penalty try, as the final tackle was high and dangerous. In the meantime, Thisun Perera received marching orders for his foul play. (SC 19 – 00 LC)

At the halftime break, Science College was in complete control, boasting a handsome and well-deserved 19 – 00 lead.

Half time: Science College 19 (3T, 2C) – 00 Lumbini College

The second half began with Lumbini College desperate for redemption. Their urgency yielded immediate results as they opened their account through a penalty kick. Initially, Lumbini got a penalty as Science College was penalized for not releasing the ball at the deck. They took a quick tap and earned another penalty for not retreating 10 metres. This time Lumbini opted to break the duck by slotting it. Sachintha Induwara made no mistake with the place kick to turn the scoreboard. (SC 19 – 03 LC)

Later, Science slotted another timely punt kick towards the whitewash. As Chase was on, Lumbini had to kick it out over the deadline, resulting in a five-metre scrum in Science College’s favour. The Science applied huge pressure on Lumbini’s defence with brilliant pick-and-drive phases. Suddenly, Hooker Chanuka Iwansha managed to cross the whitewash for the all-important bonus point try with a show-and-go technique by foxing the entire Lumbini defense. Pahan Nesadu made a successful conversion to extend the lead. (SC 26 – 03 LC)

Lumbini refused to lie down and made a bold reply immediately with a brilliant attack. Science College’s defence was astonished with the sudden pressure, and as the foul play was mounting from their side, the referee sent Mihisara to the naughty chair. Later, Lumbini received a penalty for a high tackle near the left corner flag. Lumbini opted for a tap-and-go, and the decision paid dividends early as the masculine grit Thisun Perera crossed the whitewash with the push of his latcher. Sachintha Induwara made a peach of a conversion to cut the deficit. This score offered a glimmer of hope for the Lumbini fans and suggested a potential late comeback. (SC 26 – 10 LC )

Interestingly, while Science had been scoring rapidly in the first half, they failed to add to their tally during the final 25 minutes. Conversely, their defense ensured Lumbini could not bridge the gap further.

When the final whistle blew, Science College marched off the pitch with a dominating 26 – 10 point victory. The result sees the scientists take a significant step towards safety, distancing themselves from the danger zone of being relegated. Meanwhile, for Lumbini College, the defeat casts a shadow over their season, suggesting that their return to the elite group may well be short-lived unless some dramatic thing will happen during the next encounters.
