The much-anticipated Dialog Schools Rugby League 2026 – Division 1: Segment A will begin on the 23rd of April. The opening match features last year’s runners-up, Wesley College, taking on the newly promoted Prince of Wales’ College at Havelock Park, Colombo.
The league format remains unchanged from last year, with 18 teams divided into three groups. All teams will play five games in the first round within their respective groups. The progression structure is as follows:
- Cup: The 1st and 2nd placed teams
- Plate: The 3rd and 4th placed teams
- Bowl: The 5th and 6th placed teams
The two bottom-placed teams (overall) will be relegated to Segment B for the 2027 season. In the second round, each team will play four games against opponents from the other two groups.
Last year, Vidyartha College and Dharmaraja College were relegated to Segment B. Conversely, Lumbini College and Prince of Wales’ College earned promotion to the top division.
Trinity College, Kandy, are the reigning champions of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025. Their victory last season broke a 38-year drought to secure the League title. While Trinity claimed the Cup, D.S. Senanayake College and St. Anthony’s College were crowned Plate and Bowl champions, respectively.
Recently, Trinity College ended a 15-year wait by winning the first competition of 2026 – the coveted President’s Trophy defeating Royal College in the final with a record score. In the Premier Trophy, Lumbini College emerged victorious after beating Dharmaraja College in the final.
The three groups are divided as per last year’s seedings and will have some very interesting battles in the 1st round such as the Trinity vs Isipathana, St. Joseph’s vs St. Peter’s and Royal vs S. Thomas’.
Following the conclusion of the 1st round, the tournament will take a one-week hiatus. The 2nd round is scheduled to follow shortly after, with the champions of each category expected to be crowned by the end of June.
