A week 3 fixture of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2023 took place today (01st of July) at the Zahira College grounds between the home team Zahira College and Wesley College. A solid all-round effort by the green and maroon army gave them a 2nd win in as many games with a scoreline of 24-08.

Both the teams tried to show some attacking rugby early in the game but Zahira showcased they have the upper hand when it comes to the strength and conditioning of the forwards. At the 10th minute mark after winning a lineout inside the 22m territory of Science, Zahira executed a brilliant rolling maul and their Prop Mohommad Rifad scored the first try to open their account. The 2 extra points were added when Ahamed Saad got the conversion through (ZC 07 – 00 SC)

For Zahira majority of the workload was done by their forwards but at times their line looked dangerous and one of their fast-paced runs using an angle worked out brilliantly less than 15 minutes after the first try to increase their lead to 12. Suhaad Endra was the try scorer for Zahira and unfortunately, Saad failed to add the 2 extra points (ZC 12 – 00 SC)

Science, after being pushed back big time in the first 25 minutes, finally showed some aggression and pushed forward into the 22m territory of Zahira. But a high tackle meant Science won a penalty and they decided to go for the 3 points which Oshadha Mahamudiyanselage did brilliantly (ZC 12 – 03 SC)

Just before the halftime whistle, the fly-half of Zahira Hakeem Chunchi produced a stunning run where he evaded two Science defenders and sidestepped another to find the whitewash leaving Science with a lot of work in the 2nd half. Saad kicked the conversion through and 2 more points were added to his team (ZC 19 – 03 SC)

After scoring a try from the last move of the first half, Zahira began the 2nd half with a bang scoring a try inside the first minute of the half. Mohommad Saif who found the try line once again followed the running-at-an-angle strategy they used. Ahamed Saad missed the conversion to extend the lead but this fourth try meant Zahira registered a bonus point from the clash as well (ZC 24 – 03 SC)

On the stroke of the 50th minute, the most highlighted player from the Science line-up Mahamudiyanselage got over the line after winning a penalty to decrease the lead. However, he missed the conversion (ZC 24 – 08 SC)

Zahira College winger Mohommad Saif was adjudged NDB Bank player of the match for his remarkable speed that troubled the Science College defence quite a lot. With 2 wins out of 2, Zahira are in a very strong position but they will have to improve more in using supporting players because they missed out on possible try-scoring opportunities due to players trying to go by themselves. For Science, the road ahead will be even tougher and they will need to make some big improvements to register a W.
