Davis Cup: Sri Lanka loses opening Singles

Sri Lanka ended up in disappointment at the conclusion of the first day of play in the Davis Cup Relegation tie against Indonesia played at Surakarta with the Lankans losing the crucial first two singles.

The Lankan pair Harshana Godamanne and Yasitha De Silva could not counter the top seeded Indonesian players as the Indonesians went 2-0 up at the conclusion of day one.

Playing the opening game, Harshana Godamanne faced David Susanto of Indonesia. Despite Godamanne’s fight back, the Indonesian was able to secure a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win. It was a similar story in the 2nd single when Yasitha de Silva faced Indonesia’s top-ranked player Christopher Rungkat.

Playing the first set Rungkat went up 6-2 and later bettered his finish by 6-0 second set. He finally added the finishing touches to his win in the third set winning it 6-2. Yasitha De Silva playing his second Davis Cup could not compete on even grounds to stage a fightback against the Indonesian.

Tomorrow will be the fixture that will decide Sri Lanka’s fate in the series. The doubles encounter will be played at Surakarta at 1230h local time and it will be crucial that Sri Lanka wins the encounter if they intend to stay in the top tier.

Sri Lanka’s Harshana Godamanne & Yasitha De Silva will face Adithya Sasongko & Sunu-Wahyu Trijati in the doubles encounter which would later be followed by the returning singles which will be played on the third and final day.
