Mathews who was due to return to lead the ODI side in their ICC Champions Trophy campaign after a hiatus of several months had complained of stiffness and pain, prompting the Team management to conduct radiographic investigations which revealed a strain on the muscle.

Mathews, who got injured during Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa in January, missed out on the Australia T20Is and the full home series against Bangladesh before returning to action with a stint in IPL for Delhi Daredevils.

The skipper made 95 in a keenly fought warm up against Australia last Friday but did not play the warm-up against New Zealand. Mathews will engage in supervised recovery over the next few days but will most likely sit out the first group stage match against South Africa on Saturday with Vice-Captain Upul Tharanga most likely to lead the side.
