ICC has taken the decision to allow concussion player replacements in all formats of cricket at the ongoing ICC annual conference in London, after two years of trials in domestic cricket.

From 1st of August 2019, the rule will be added to the playing conditions in men’s and women’s international and First-class cricket worldwide, which would mean the Ashes 2019 in England will be the first series to allow this rule.

“Decisions on replacements will continue to be made by the team medical representative and the player should be a like-for-like replacement who will need to be approved by the Match Referee,” is stated in the ICC media release.

This decision has been in consideration since the tragic death of Australian cricketer Phil Hughes in 2014 and the rule was approved for Sheffield Shield in Australia in May 2017.

The ICC approved a revised set of Medical Standards for ICC global and regional events and all other international cricket. The standards are aimed at driving greater consistency in medical care of players around the world.

Slow Over rate breaches

The punishment for over rate offences have seen changes too. Instead of holding the responsible for serious over rate breaches by suspending him for a certain number of matches, the ICC has decided to deduct points from competition points in the World Test Championship matches.

From the beginning of the Test Championship, each team will be deducted 2 points for every over that is behind the required over rate.

Apart from that, all players will be fined equally for slow over rates at the same level as the captain.
