Skipper of Maliyadeva College, Chandupa Abeysinghe, made an unbeaten century to steer the Devans to the driving seat at the 41st Battle of the Rocks annual big match.
St. Anne’s Captain Buddhima Nandasiri invited Maliayadeva to bat first. After an early breakthrough gotten by pace bowler Geethika Silva, the Maliyadeva Captain Chandupa Abeysinghe walked into the crease. Since then he never looked back and anchored the innings until the end of the day’s play. Chandupa was resilient throughout the innings though he scored at a lower strike rate. Chandupa faced for 246 balls to pile up his unbeaten 105 runs.
Rajith Navodya (28), Dimath Abeysinghe (33) and power hitter Vinika Galappaththi (31 not out) gave a good support to the Skipper to escalate their team total to 221/6 within 83 overs, where the play stopped due to bad light.
For St. Anne’s College, Yashmin Jayasundara and Bazeer Shakeel were up to the task and picked up two wickets each, but struggled against the Skipper of the Devans. Geethika Silva and Kevin Nanayakkara shared 1 wicket each.
Tomorrow is the final day of this encounter, and Maliyadeva will hopefully look out for quick runs in the early hour, going for a declaration to get a result for the match.
