The Racing Cycle event of the 49th National Sports Festival, organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Department of Sports Development, concluded successfully in Hikkaduwa, Galle. After a neck-and-neck contest, Chandimal Jayasinghe and Anne Shenali Perera, both from Western Province, claimed the Men’s and Women’s gold medals respectively.
The racing track started in front of the Divisional Secretariat Office in Hikkaduwa and went across Rathagama, Boossa, Karapitiya, Ginthota, Baddegama and Archchikanda, with the cyclists return back to the starting point at Hikkaduwa. The Women’s event saw only one round, which covered a distance of 55 km, and the Men’s race covered over 164 km, which took three rounds at the aforementioned route. The competitiveness of the race could be seen at a higher level, as a number of top-rated cyclists on the island were featured in this prestigious calendar cycling event.
Lance Corporal Sandaruwan Pinthu of the Sri Lanka Army, who became the runner-up at the recently concluded “Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2025”, took the lead in the 1st and 2nd sprints. However, the talented cyclist from the North Western Province was unfortunately beaten in the Final round by Chandimal Jayasinghe of Western Province. He was closely contested by Pathum Sampath Weerasinghe and Krishan Sanjula of North Central Province.
