Champika Fernando elected President of Sports Journalists Association

The newly formed ‘Sports Journalists Association’ held its first official meeting on the 23rd of November at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute with the participation of most sports journalists in the country. Mr. Champika Fernando of ‘The Sunday Times’ was elected President, uncontested. 

A new board of directors was also appointed consisting of representatives from  a few stable media networks in Sri Lanka.

Along with Mr.Fernando, Mr.Sirinaama Rajapaksha of ‘Mawbima’, Mr.Yohan Baasura of ‘Lankadeepa’ and ‘Deshaya’, and Mr.K.Ram Krishnan of ‘Ceylon Today’ were appointed General Secretary, Treasurer and National Organizer, respectively.

Moreover, Mr.Pathum Sri Wijerathna of ‘Ada’ , Mr.Paalitha Senarath Yapa of ‘Rupavahini’, Mr.Nevil Anthony of ‘Weerakesari’ and Mr.Hasitha Akalanka of ‘Rupavahini’ were designated as Vice-Presidents of the association.

The Installation ceremony was conducted by the previous coordinators of Sports media and Journalism, Director of news, Attorney-at-law Gen.Sudarshana Gunawardana, Director of the radio corporation Gen.Eranda Hettiarrachhi, President of Salasinay Ltd Mr.Shantha Bandara and Media officer of the Ministry of Sports Mr.Lahiru Samarasinghe.

To discuss matters such as recruitment of new members and forming policies and codes of conduct, the executive committee has scheduled a meeting on the 30th of this month.

  • Coordinator– Lahiru Samarasinghe (Media officer – Ministry of Sports)
