Sri Lanka begins CAVA campaign in style

The Central Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship (CAVA) 2023 hosted by Sri Lanka kicked off yesterday (09) at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo. 

On the opening day of the tournament, the hosts Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan managed to win their first games, beating Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan, respectively. 

After a very tough fight in the first match, Afghanistan players were able to beat Uzbekistan 3-2. 

Afghanistan managed to win the first two sets 25-17 and 26-24, but it was Uzbekistan who won the third and fourth sets 28-26 and 25-22. Afghanistan won the decisive final set of the match 15-13. 

After the opening ceremony, which was held later in the evening, the hosts Sri Lanka took to the court for their opening game against the strong Saudi Arabian side. 

The Sri Lankan players who maintained their dominance throughout the match, registered a 3-0 win with the scores in the three sets being 25-19, 25-17 and 26-24. 

The defending champions, Sri Lanka’s performance was outstanding throughout the game as the attacking style of captain Deeptha Romesh, Ayesh, Lasindu Methmal and Mahela Indeewara stood out.

In the final match held on the first day, the Nepalese sealed a 3-1 win over Bangladesh. They managed to win the first set 25-20 but Bangladesh came back, winning the second set 25-19. 

Nepal got back into the contest, winning the third and fourth sets with the scores of 25-23 and 25-21. 

Three more matches are scheduled to be held today (10), which is the second day of the tournament.
