Carlton introduces Mountain Biking

The National Mountain Biking Association unfolds the Carlton Super Sports Mountain Biking Championship 2013 on March 1 in Tissamaharama. An exciting and adventurous sport; the organisers hope to draw in about 2000 cyclist from all areas in the rally part of the event.

  

The rally named ‘cyclone’ will run on the ‘go green with cycling” theme

Tharunyata Hetak chairman Namal Rajapaksa, believes it will entice children from remote schools in Hambathota to take up to mountain biking, which is now a very popular in Hambanthota.

Zonal Education Directors of Hambanthota, Tangalle, Walasmulla and Hakmana have pulled in their weight to this event expecting a turn massive turn out from the schools in the area. The forces and police and also combined their efforts lending in mobile units.  Also self employed youth who use bicycles are also expected to join in support. 

This parade will be a terrain of 7 km starting from Debarawewa junction and continuing to the Ceylon Auto Drome track. 

The real championship which will be worked for age groups of 10 -19 year olds both girls and boys will start at 9.30 am at the Ceylon Autodrome capable of holding eleven events. The track will consist of 7 obstacles consisting of Ramps, Jumps, foot paths ,loops, down hills and climbs making it rugged and difficult.

The open men’s and the open women’s segments where time tested mountain bikers including those from the forces etc will fight next to locals and other veterans from around the place.  Handsome cash prices are on offer with over 500,000 in cash and gifts for winners in addition to medals and certificates.  Almost a 100 awards are lined up in order to boost the sport and bring enthusiasm and participation to it.
