Team Greys kicked off their SLC T20 League 2025 campaign with a commanding victory over Team Blues in the second match of the tournament, held today (8th August) at the iconic Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds in Colombo.
Winning the toss, Team Blues, led by Dunith Wellalage, opted to bowl first, hoping to restrict Team Greys on a pitch known for assisting bowlers. However, their plans were quickly dismantled as Team Greys’ batters took control.
Posting a formidable 192/4 in their 20 overs, Team Greys set a daunting target, thanks to a match-defining partnership between Nuwanidu Fernando and Charith Asalanka.
Nuwanidu Fernando anchored the innings with an unbeaten 70 off 52 balls, peppering the boundary with eight fours and a towering six. His composed knock provided stability, while skipper Charith Asalanka unleashed an aggressive 59 off 34 balls, smashing seven fours and two sixes.
The duo’s 122-run stand for the fourth wicket was the cornerstone of Team Greys’ imposing total, leaving Team Blues’ bowlers searching for answers.
Chasing 193, Team Blues needed a strong start. Vishen Halambage provided a fiery start with 35, while Kusal Perera (33) and Dasun Shanaka (31) fought valiantly to keep their side in the hunt.
However, their efforts were not enough as Team Blues managed only 168/8 in their 20 overs, falling 24 runs short of the target.
Eshan Malinga proved to be the wrecker-in-chief for Team Greys, dismantling Team Blues’ top order with a fiery spell of 4/42. Despite being expensive, his ability to strike at crucial moments broke the back of the Blues’ batting lineup.
Left-arm seamer Binura Fernando complemented Malinga’s efforts, finishing with an impressive 3/36 to wrap up the tail and seal the victory for Team Greys.
Fans can look forward to more action as the tournament continues with the third match between Team Greys and Team Greens, scheduled for August 10, at the same venue.
