Thiago Braz da Silva became Brazil’s latest sensation after he clinched the pole vault gold medal defeating champion Renaud Lavillenie of France.

Silva was cheered to his victory by the crowds gathered at the stadium and became the second Gold medalist for the hosts at the 31st Olympiad. He also became the first athlete to win a medal in Athletics for Brazil since 2008.

Miller denies Felix gold with a dive

Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas won a dramatic gold medal in the women’s 400m final at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In a thrilling finish Miller stumbled across the line as she edged out American world champion Allyson Felix to win in 49.44 seconds.

Felix, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, took silver in 49.51 seconds with Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson third.

David Rudisha creates history by defending his 800m Olympic title

The 27-year-old Kenyan showed his experience to keep his composure after compatriot Alfred Kipketer sprinted clear on the first lap of the race. Rudisha hit the front with about 300m to go as Kipketer started to fade and never looked troubled as he won in one minute 42.15 seconds. Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi won silver and the fast-finishing Clayton Murphy of the United States took bronze.
